Free Exercise Classes for Cancer Patients and Survivors

Free exercise classes

Strength for Life, a non profit organization providing FREE exercise classes for cancer patients/survivors, will be starting the next session of classes at Mather Hospital on Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm.

We invite any cancer survivor to join us for a full body workout utilizing resistance bands, stability balls and floor work.  All exercises can be adapted to suit your abilities - including chair work if need be.

We ask that you get medical clearance prior to the first class, pre-register so we can be prepared with equipment for you to keep, and come with an open mind and drive to be stronger and more flexible.

The next session will begin on February 20th - given we have a minimum of 4 participants to hold the class.  Give this some thought, plan to commit to 8 sessions and call 631-675-6513 to register or email strengthforlife@optonline.net.

There are so many studies since the American College of Sports Medicine revised their guidelines in 2010 for cancer patients/survivors to "avoid inactivity." The recent studies show 50 - 60% reduced risk of re-occurrence when exercise is added to your treatment and recovery plan.  Those percentages are for breast and colon cancer, some other cancer have an even greater reduction in risk.

During treatment exercise reduces fatigue (seems unlikely but it is a fact), reduces nausea, increases mood, lessens anxiety and has a plethora of other wonderful benefits.

The classes are held by a Certified Cancer Exercise Specialist, the participants are your peers and the support that unfolds is priceless.
