10 Worst Crimes of 2010

The hardest hitting, highest-level and strangest crimes relating to Hauppauge over the past year.

In 2010, many of the crimes that have occurred in  Hauppauge or involved Hauppauge residents involve drugs, drunk driving, criminal mischief and non-serious misdemeanors. 

There are those incidents that warrant mention when looking over the past year, due either to their severity of the crime committed or unique circumstances surrounding an arrest. Here are the top 10 worst crimes of 2010 as related to Hauppauge since September 2010.

1.
Hauppauge resident Gary Monge, 37, was arrested Oct. 21 for allegedly selling cocaine to undercover police officer over the past two years. Monge pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to possess and distribute controlled substances.

The charges stemmed from a joint undercover investigation run by the Drug Enforcement Administration agents and Suffolk County Police from November 2009 to June 2010, when agents allege Monge sold 290 grams of cocaine for over $12,000 in Islandia on six different occasions. Monge was held without bail after prosecutors argued he may attempt to leave the country and poses a danger to the community.

Hauppauge resident Daniel Bliss, 48, who allegedly broke into two Nassau County restaurants was busted after police were able to see surveillance tapes. IHOP employees showed responding officers a surveillance tape that clearly identified Bliss's vehicle, leading to Pomodorino's Restaurant in Seaford and his later arrest, according to police.

Suffolk County Police's Fourth Precinct is looking for anyone who may have witnessed an accident involving a bicyclist in Hauppauge on Wednesday evening. Police responded to multiple 911 calls at 5:20 p.m Wednesday reporting a bicyclist laying in the road at the intersection of Rabro Drive and Nicon Court. They found an 18-year-old man with serious physical injuries, according to police reports.

 
Suffolk County Police received a call that multiple drums filled with an unknown substance were found in the woods off Millmay Avenue, across from Hauppauge Landfill at approximately 11 a.m. on Oct. 14.

Police said multiple small drums of oil were found abandoned in the woods. An officer estimated less than a gallon had spilled, contaminating soil in the area

5. Kevin Moley, 50, of Coram, was arrested at 8:15 a.m. in Hauppauge on Sept. 29, on charges of  third-degree grand larceny. Moley allegedly stole more than $3000 back in August. Moley is also facing a second-degree grand larceny for stealing $50,000 from property owners, according to police reports. He said he was going to perform improvements on a property. However, it was reported that he never worked on the property.

6. Coram resident Candy Sawyer, 24, was arrested in Hauppauge on fugitive charges. Sawyer violated an order of protection and committed battery in Florida, according to police.  The reports state that Sawyer then fled to Coram.

7. Shawn Jenkins, 16, of Bayshore, was arrested Oct. 11 for obstructing traffic in Hauppauge . Police said Jenkins stood in the middle of Route 347 on Mount Pleasant Road on Oct. 10 screaming profanities. He continued to scream while taking his shirt off and refusing to move.

8. William Riggio, 39, of Mt. Sinai, was arrested Oct. 15 for second-degree grand larceny. Riggio was arrested at the North Country Complex at 8:43 a.m. after reportly stealing over $50,000. Police say this is the second time Riggio has faced these charges. He was charged for grand larceny back in February.

9. Amanda Schnebel, of Hauppauge, was arrested Oct. 25 for leaving the scene of property damage. Police said Schnebel  was driving a 2001 Toyota when she hit the curb, went across the grass, and hit the fence in front of the Kings Park Post Office. She then left the scene of the accident, according to police. She was later arrested at 4:37 p.m. on Veterans Highway.
