3 Arrested, 50 Summonses Issued on Route 454

Traffic enforcement initiative on local road leads to police chase.

Suffolk County police arrested three people and issues approximately 50 summonses during a traffic enforcement effort Thursday on Route 454.

As part of a continuing effort to reduce the number of crashes, Fourth and Fifth Precinct COPE (Community Oriented Police Enforcement) units conducted a joint initiative targeting aggressive and unsafe drivers on Route 454 from Commack/Hauppauge to Holbrook on April 11, police said.

According to police, Fourth Precinct COPE Officer Guy Gourlay attempted to pull over a vehicle when the driver, Michael Russo, fled. The officer initiated a short pursuit and Russo was arrested after he became stuck in traffic. Russo, 20, of Washington Avenue, Holtsville, was charged with unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle in the third degree, reckless driving, DWAI drugs and criminal possession of marijuana.

Fifth Precinct COPE Officers also arrested Cory Law, 31, of Brentwood, for a warrant, and Kevin Mazerall, 22, of Center Moriches, on a charge of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the second degree.
