5 Things to Know: The Weekend's Big News

The past weekend was a busy one across Suffolk County and the East End, with local tragedies, crimes and events making the headlines.

Here are five of those stories, in case you missed them.

1. In perhaps the biggest story of the weekend, of Patrick Luca, a Smithtown native and NYPD recruiter who went missing Friday after kayaking in waters off of Kings Park Bluff with his 5-year-old son. The boy, who was pulled out of the water by local boaters Friday, told rescuers his father “went down.” Luca was not wearing a life-preserver when his body was found.

2. A bank robber struck the People’s United branch in Lake Grove on Saturday, after a teller included the red dye pack with the loot.

3. An East Quogue man for the robbery of a Capital One bank in Riverhead on Friday.

4. In East Hampton, a 700-pound dead on the shores of Montauk with deep propeller wounds in its shell. The turtle, which could not be removed because it turned up in a rocky part of the shore, is a member of an endangered species.
