Suffolk police report woman injured in accident on Route 111 South; conflicting reports as to its cause.

An accident caused Suffolk County police shut down the Route 111 underpass to the Long Island Expressway for two hours on Tuesday afternoon.

Suffolk County police said they received a phone call at roughly 2:30 p.m. Tuesday reporting an accident on Route 111's southbound lane underneath the Long Island Expressway overpass.

An injured woman was rushed to the hospital via ambulance, according to police. No information regarding the extent of her injuries was immediately available.

Police closed off Route 111 underneath the overpass and blocked the Expressway Service Road North with caution tape. Motorists headed westbound on the service road were being directed to turn onto northbound Route 111 and use a U-turn location to continue on the Expressway Service Road North, causing traffic delays.

It's unclear how the woman got from the LIE overpass down to Route 111, as Suffolk County police were investigating the accident.

Newsday reports the woman had been driving westbound on the LIE when she pulled over onto the shoulder of the road, got out of her car and was clipped by the side view mirror of another vehicle. She then got back in her car, started driving, and tried to get out of her still-moving vehicle, according to the Suffolk Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff's Chief Deputy Kerry Kneitel told Newday that after the woman veered off the LIE into a bank of trees, witnesses reported seeing her run up to the overpass.

Suffolk County police were actively investigating a gray SUV crashed into the woods off the LIE westbound, a few hundred feet past the Route 111 intersection.
