Hauppauge Car Crash Takes Out Fire Hydrant, Smashes Into Tree

Suffolk police say they responded to approximately 250 crashes Friday afternoon.

A driver of a Jeep traveling on Oster Ave. in Hauppauge smashed into a fire hydrant before crashing into a tree this morning as a result of Friday’s icy road conditions.

Suffolk County police said they responded to about 250 car crashes between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday and about 300 calls for injured people, such as people who had fell.

Police issued an advisory earlier on Friday warning drivers of the hazardous conditions. Brookhaven Town officials sent out truck sanders and salters to area roads to combat the slick roads.
