Cops: Nesconset Man Arrested for Robbing Bank

Suffolk County police arrested Andreas Dambakakis, 30, for allegedly robbing People's United Bank.

A Nesconset man was arrested for allegedly robbing People's United Bank on Thursday morning, according to Suffolk County police.

Andreas Dambakakis, 30, was arrested Thursday morning and charged with one count of third-degree robbery.

Police said a man entered People's United Bank on Smithtown Boulevard in Nesconset at 8:41 a.m. Tuesday. The man approached a teller and handed over a note stating he had a gun and wanted cash. The note instructed teller to place that cash in his black messenger bag.

The People's United Bank employee complied with the robber's demand and handed over cash. The man then fled the bank on foot. The exact amount stolen was not disclosed.

Police responded to the scene with K-9 units and conducted an aerial helicopter search for the suspect. Roughly one hour later, Dambakakis was arrested at his home and taken into police custody.

Dambakakis is being held over night at the Seventh Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned in Central Islip courts on Friday.
