Crimes Nearby: Bail Denied For Man Suspected of Killing Grandmother

Kings Park

A Suffolk County Judge on Sunday denied bail for Clarence Newcomb in the death of his grandmother, according to Newsday.

Newcomb will also remain under medical supervision in jail as he awaits trial.

According to Newsday, prosecutors described the crime in detail at the hearing, claiming that Newcomb had choked his grandmother, 82-year-old Kathleen Newcomb, and put his "knee on the small of her back ... until she couldn't breathe" after the two argued over what to watch on television on Friday.

Newcomb had been raised by his grandmother. His father lives in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and his mother lives in Utah, where she is a member of the Ute American Indian tribe.

Two hours before Clarence Newcomb was arrested and charged with manslaughter Friday in the death of his own grandmother, the 25-year-old visited a neighbor, speaking incoherently and carrying a baseball bat.

Smithtown

Suffolk County Police are investigating a bar fight on Dec. 23 that left one person with facial lacerations.

According to police, officers responded to a call of two men fighting at Barringtons at roughly 4 a.m. Police said one man was cut in his face with an unknown sharp instrument during the fight.

The victim was brought to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center.

No arrests have been made, and an investigation is underway.

Huntington

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers and Second Squad detectives are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate the woman who robbed a Greenlawn gas station at gunpoint on New Year’s Eve.

A woman entered the Gulf station at 253 Broadway, at 7 p.m., pulled a handgun, fired a shot at the gas attendant, and stole cash. The attendant was not injured. She fled northbound behind 7-Eleven. The thief is described as a light-skinned black female, about 5 feet tall, skinny, large dark eyes, in her late 20s to early 30s. She was wearing all dark clothing which included a baseball cap, hooded sweatshirt and jacket, tight jeans and white sneakers.

Half Hollow Hills

Suffolk County Police are seeking two suspects they said robbed a Dix Hills gas station at gunpoint on New Year’s Eve.

According to police, the two men displaying handguns entered the Sunoco station at 765 Deer Park Ave., at 8:42 p.m. and stole cash and cigarettes. They fled on foot on New Jersey Street.

Police said the suspects are black, with one man wearing a brown jacket with yellow stitching, possibly an Ed Hardy jacket.
