Crimes Nearby: Man Charged in Fatal Hit-and-Run

A look at recent crime in the region.

The following information was supplied by the Suffolk County police department. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

Huntington 

A Huntington Station man was arrested Wednesday in the Aug. 4 fatal hit-and-run accident on New York Avenue.

Suffolk County police charged Richard Wright, 27, with leaving the scene of an accident in the crash that killed Reinaldo Velasquez-Yanes, 25. 

Commack

A woman was arrested Sept. 7 after allegedly taking 65 cans of baby formula from Target in Commack. In addition to the baby formula, police said Terry Bodden, 28, whose address was not listed, also stole women’s sleepwear from the store. Police said she took more than $1,000 worth of goods in total. She was charged with grand larceny in the fourth degree, a felony.

Smithtown

A hankering for candy and chips landed a group of local teenagers with felony charges Friday after they broke into Saint James building and smashed a vending machine.

According to police, five teens, from Smithtown, Saint James and Commack, ages 18 and 19, broke into a building at 1 Flowerfield Sept. 6 at 12:25 a.m. The boys then took a fire extinguisher and smashed a vending machine with it, taking candy and chips.

The teens were charged with burglary in the third degree, a felony.

Northport

Residents have taken note of several burglaries in East Northport, in which homes have been broken into during the day.  

According to police, a burglary occurred on Bruce Lane Sept. 3 at 12:45 p.m. The perpetrator was said to have taken jewelry and electronics.  

The next day, a home on Greenleaf Drive in Eleood was burglarized. The 911 caller told police that around 12:30 p.m., an unknown person smashed the home's back door window glass and took jewelry including a 2-karat diamond, ruby ring, a diamond watch, necklaces, a silver medallion and a bangle bracelet.

A week earlier, a homeowner reported to police that their home on Grover Lane in East Northport had been broken into on Aug. 27. The subject is believed to have entered through a rear window, however the homeowner reported that nothing was taken.
