Labor and Welfare Fraud Arrests Top Crime Report

Weekly police blotter of crime activity in Hauppauge from the Suffolk Police Public Information Office.

The following information is taken from the Suffolk County Police Department's Media Incident list for the Fourth Precinct. The following individuals are not convicted of a crime, but have been arrested on the charges. Defendants are considered innocent until convicted or proven guilty. These are the arrested and incidents from Jan. 18 – Jan. 24. Arrests: Miguel Corporan, 53, of Bayshore, was arrested Jan. 21 at 9:30 a.m. in Hauppauge for welfare fraud. Between May 2007 and June 2009. Corporan submitted false statements to the NYS Social Security Department, according to police reports. Corporan submitted these documents for a co-defendant claiming he was his employer. Police said once these false documents were discovered, Corporan was arrested.  Carlos Santos, 47, of Ronkonkoma, was arrested Jan. 21 in Hauppauge for labor law wage violation. Police said they received reports Santos agreed to pay a previous employee $15 an hour. According to the defendant, Santos failed to pay. Santos was arrested at 11:50 a.m. Duane Garcia, 39, of Nesconset, was arrested in Hauppauge Jan. 20 for a domestic disturbance. Police would only say that the incident happened at 4 a.m. and would not comment on any of the details.  Michael Ciano, 34, of Port Jefferson Station, was arrested in Hauppauge Jan. 19 for petit larceny. Police said Ciano stole two DVD players and a flat screen television from Sears at 6:20 p.m. Ciano was arrested shortly after 7 p.m.  Kevin Cruz, 22, of Hauppauge, was arrested in Hauppauge on Jan. 18 for criminal obstruction. Police would not comment on the details of the incident, but did say it was a domestic disturbance.  If the above-mentioned charges change, the individual is acquitted or charges dropped, please notify the editor at sara-megan.walsh@patch.com with proof and Patch will be glad to update this post.
