UPDATED: LIE Closure Extended Until 9 p.m.

Police close exits Exit 57 to Exit 73 in both directions following blizzard.

Update, 3:50 p.m.: Suffolk County Police announced that the Long Island Expressway will be closed in both directions, between exits 57 and 73, until 9 p.m. Sunday.

Original story: Suffolk County police will close a portion of the Long Island Expressway on Sunday to remove snow that still continues to cover many parts of the roadway.

Police said the highway will be shut in both directions from Exit 57/Nichols Road to Exit 73/Riverhead on Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Throughout Saturday, stranded cars along the highway made snow removal difficult. While snow totals from Friday's blizzard have varied by town, much of the region saw a minimum of two feet of snow dumped on the area.

Brookhaven town highway workers on Saturday started removing abandoned cars on roadways using forklifts.

What a joke. You would think it was the end of the world. Why they weren't plowing during the storm is beyond me.

Does anyone know if the service roads will be open in this stretch. I have to go to exit 58 this afternoon.

Why were those people in the road in the middle of a blizzard in the first place. We all received enough warning to stay home or go home early, and off the roads. They could have plowed the l.i.e saturday if it were'nt for that, no? Just saying.

Some people had no choice, like my youngest son, who's job NEVER EVER closes or let's them out early (the nature of the business, they simply cannot close)...Luckily he has a 4 wheel drive truck, so he made it home and back (twice) already....And then some people, like my oldest son, were just plain STUPID (or perhaps the nonchalant attitude that tends to be a part of youth!) and never thought they'd wind up stuck in the snow in the middle of a street.....

What type of job can never close? my one child was told she had to be at work, at 4am,, she got in , got ride by neighbor, my area has not seen a plow..school is tomorrow, many of us have to go back to work,, how long it take to plowus out,,'
H.LYNCH February 10, 2013 at 01:44 PM
so is this where all the plows are now on LIE? anyone see any in eagle estates.
Mels Ditties February 10, 2013 at 01:55 PM
Besides places like hospitals & 7-11's, there are places that contract to backup other businesses when they close!...
Mels Ditties February 10, 2013 at 02:04 PM

Those people were not there by choice - one man left brooklyn at 3pm and got stuck. I left my job at 5 because they would not close. Unfortunately some of us don't have the leisure to just walk off a job! So before you comment try thinking. It took me two hours for a 20 min drive and many people were on the roads for over two hours trying to get home. The real problem is the terrible system we have of cleaning our roads - the plows were out but were stuck in traffic with us. Upstate and Vermont never have these problems because they are better prepared - their doing something immediately not after the fact. The men and women who do the cleaning are working hard its the way management set the plan for clean ups. They need to sand and salt much earlier
H.LYNCH February 10, 2013 at 02:14 PM
again LI not prepared... yes the town workers are working hard, no sleep, not home, and such,,we thank them... but making money. like some of us are not because we can not get out.. yes be patient, but tomorrow is Monday, I have to go to work, as my hubby, 2 kids have college classes if open, and what about local school,,
H.LYNCH February 10, 2013 at 02:15 PM
we pay high taxes, maybe like some say dont pay,, and the town may get it,,lol... we have a special election for hway super in brookhaven, I wonder ..

jon vedder February 10, 2013 at 03:24 PM
My wife works at king kullen and they didnt close till 9pm on friday and the poor people who had to drive home! Its sad that certain places stayed open and put their employees in danger cuz they saw $$$ signs.

I realize that everyone is frustrated as I am (I live in Smithtown/Nesconset) our roads have not been plowed and the way they handled Sandy Storm and now this - the only way you can try to make things better (or at least a little better) is to remember to Vote in November and vote them All out - we can sit here on the website and complain till we are blue in the face but it's not going to get us anywhere - when this is all over - people will forget and November rolls around they'll go ahead and vote without thinking and then we start all over again when disaster strtikes - You can change things in November remember this time then.

I'll vote for you Ann you are so right. This is unexceptable.
Doug February 11, 2013 at 01:11 AM
I just arrived home in Riverhead after picking someone up at JFK. I traveled County Route 51, Sunrise Highway, Rt 454, Southern State and Sagtijos Pkwy. Except for Rt 51 all roads were a disaster. Also traveled several side streets in Smithtown where it appears the roads weren't plowed any time after the snow had stopped falling. In all my travels I saw few plows. This is an epic fail!!. We've had big storms in the past. I don't recall any cleanup being handled this poorly.
Hel's Vu February 11, 2013 at 01:23 AM
You are absolutely correct. I do not recall the town of brookhaven failing so badly. We just drove back from Nassau County and our roads are horrendous. There are parts of sunrise highway that are unbelievable. Montauk Highway looks as though it had barely been plowed. What is going on???
Mattituck February 11, 2013 at 02:26 AM
Is the LIE open?
Blanca Femina February 11, 2013 at 02:41 AM
SCCC classes are called off for tomorrow if that helps... The lack of preparation out here is why, finally this year, I got a snow-suitable vehicle... I have one of those jobs that literally cannot close for weather.
Chuck February 11, 2013 at 04:04 AM
this was a big failure by our town goverment, we pay alot , but don't get alot so you have to remember this during elections , which we wil not remember , i will
Chuck February 11, 2013 at 04:05 AM
yes all roads are open
Chuck February 11, 2013 at 04:07 AM
all about money , wait to see , LIRR parking lot at Ronkonoma
H.LYNCH February 11, 2013 at 01:25 PM
this is all rediculous.. many roads still not plowed, schools closed, some can not get to wor,, yes the towns are foing wht they can, but they chose these jobs and shcould be foing them,,, don;t get the job done, dont, get a raise,, lol
