UPDATED: LIE Closure Extended Until 9 p.m.

Police close exits Exit 57 to Exit 73 in both directions following blizzard.

Update, 3:50 p.m.: Suffolk County Police announced that the Long Island Expressway will be closed in both directions, between exits 57 and 73, until 9 p.m. Sunday.

Original story: Suffolk County police will close a portion of the Long Island Expressway on Sunday to remove snow that still continues to cover many parts of the roadway.

Police said the highway will be shut in both directions from Exit 57/Nichols Road to Exit 73/Riverhead on Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Throughout Saturday, stranded cars along the highway made snow removal difficult. While snow totals from Friday's blizzard have varied by town, much of the region saw a minimum of two feet of snow dumped on the area.

Brookhaven town highway workers on Saturday started removing abandoned cars on roadways using forklifts.
