Man Crashes Car into Route 111 Pole, Gets Hit Attempting to Flee

Cesar Mendez, of Brentwood, was seriously injured while fleeing the scene of accident on Tuesday night.

 

A Brentwood man who crashed a car into pole on Route 111 was struck by another vehicle while attempting to flee the crash on Monday night, according to Suffolk County police. 

Cesar Mendez, 32, was driving a 2000 Honda on Route 111/Wheeler Road south of the Long Island Expressway, in Islip at 8:40 p.m. Monday. Police said Mendez fled the scene of the crash on foot.

While running across the eastbound lanes of the LIE, Mendez was struck by a 1993 Nissan driven by 25-year-old Amanda Orbe, of Bethpage, while west of exit 57/Veterans Highway. He suffered a head injury, according to police, and was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment. 

Mendez received two summonses, one for leaving the scene of an accident and one for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Orbe and her passenger Johanna Orbe, 23, were not injured in the accident. The Nissan has been impounded for a safety check while police continue their investigation.
