UPDATED: One Injured in Hauppauge Crash

Police say Northport man was driving on Veterans Memorial Highway when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree.

An early Saturday morning crash on Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge has left one Northport man in critical condition, police said.

According to Suffolk County Police, witnesses saw the car, a 2005 Nissan, hit the center median of the highway before it careened into a tree and overturned.

Witnesses and police tried to pull the driver out of the wreckage but were unsuccessful until firefighters from the Hauppauge and Commack Fire Departments arrived and freed the man.

Emergency workers transported the driver, Douglas Caldwell, 47, of Layne Way in Northport, to Stony Brook University Hospital, where doctors listed his condition as critical.
