Overturned Oil Tanker Spills More Than 3,000 Gallons Onto Hauppauge Roadways

Hazmat called to Hauppauge intersection of Route 111 and Motor Parkway for ongoing clean up.

An overturned oil tanker at the Route 111 and Motor Parkway intersection on Hauppauge's border spilled more than 3,000 gallons of home heating fuel onto Hauppauge roadways Wednesday afternoon.

Central Islip fire department and Suffolk County police have contained the spill, but the tanker is still leaking as of 3:30 p.m., according to a Central Islip Fire Department chief.

The Hirsh oil tanker was attempting to make a right turn onto Route 111 northbound when it collided with a commercial white van at approximately 2:40 p.m., Getty gas station workers who witnessed the accident said. The tanker speed caused it to lose balance, workers said, overturning as the white van came to rest against the utility police.
