Photo: Car Lands Vertically After Hitting Snow

No serious injuries in crash in Holbrook early Saturday.

A single-car crash in Holbrook early Saturday morning left a vehicle standing vertically next to a tree.

Police say an 18-year-old male was driving a 2007 Honda northbound on Patchogue-Holbrook Road, south of Broadway Avenue, at 2:26 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle.

The Honda entered the southbound lane, hit snow and overturned. The driver was not injured. His 16-year-old female passenger was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

It's extremely disturbing to see people from our community assuming the worst and pointing fingers. Everyone should be happy that everyone is okay and that the accident wasn't any worse than it was. Accidents happen whether you're 18, 38, or 78. Just because the driver was a young male with a young female late night doesn't mean cell phones, drugs, alcohol, sex, or reckless driving was involved. People DO lose control over their cars sometimes, especially when there's bad weather like ice and snow on the ground. Accidents are really scary. These poor kids are probably shaken up and don't need their neighbors making them out to be criminals. We're supposed to be a community and look out for each other and be happy they're okay, not assume and pass horrible judgements just because they're young….

mr dylan mckay, he saw something in the road and tried to get out of the way, and incase u didnt see the huge snow on the side of the road we flipped in the car. dont be foolish and say drugs and "touchy feely" were involved. those werent involved either. im pretty sure u would get out of the way if something was in the street as well. black ice was where we were, also why he lost control. dont tell me what happened. i am telling you what happened. i was the passanger not you.

Damn people stop playing a guessing game. Stop trying to guess what these kids did wrong. Have any of you looked at the amount of ice & snow out there? It's pathetic. It doesn't take much to miss a snow/ice patch at 3am. Thank God these kids are ok, now lets get on our town to clean up this mess. A few days ago a school bus hit a snow bank -mid day & the driver was experienced.

Renee, I see that you mother is on this thread. You may have the wool over her eyes, but there was no black ice and you weren't driving 45 MPH. I hope this incident has taught valuable lessons to both of you and your friends. I've lost friends while I was in HS to accidents and It sucks. I was out running 1 night as troopers passed me to go deliver the news to the parents of 1 of my schoolmates that their daughter was dead (along with another girl). We've never met and likely never will. If this accident had a tragic ending, I would've read the article in the Patch, shook my head, kissed my son and went on with my day. A make shift memorial on the side of the road would've been constructed, while your mother continued to deny any wrong doing. Maybe that would allow her to go on living without you or lessen the guilt of allowing you to be out at 2:30 AM? Who knows. But the bottom line, you are a very lucky young lady and your friend is even luckier, as he not only had his life in his hands, but yours too. Judging by the picture and having driven by the scene, your life was likely spared by a matter of inches. I'm showing some age, listen to Pearl Jam's, Last Kiss. - to some other people: Cait: Judging by your unique rendition of the English language, you should leave education out of any argument. Lex: This road is unsafe due to speed and reckless driving. My life and more importantly, the lives of my family are at risk. I pass judgement.

While we try to encourage an open forum on our stories, I think a multitude of voices have been heard about this story. We'd like to reiterate that police have not provided any cause of the accident, including whether or not the crash was the result of some sort of wrongdoing on the part of the driver or passenger. We're closing down comments on this thread. Thank you for your participation.
