Update: Bicyclist Injured in Holbrook Crash Has Died

Authorities say Kevin Mazanek of Sayville died from his injuries at 9:56 a.m.

UPDATE 9:56 a.m. Saturday: Police said Kevin Mazanek, 48, of Sayville has died from injuries sustained after he was hit by a car while riding his bike on Veterans Memorial Highway Friday afternoon in Holbrook. He succumbed to his injuries at Stony Brook University Hospital Medical Center.

The accident occurred at 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of St. James Street after Mazanek, who was riding eastbound in the left hand shoulder of the westbound lanes of the highway, "apparently veered into the left travel lane," police said.

That's when a 1997 Ford Explorer, driven by 33-year-old Cleofes  Velasquez, of Brentwood, struck the blue Roadmaster Mountain Fury bicycle, police said.

Mazanek was transported via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition with a severe head injury, police said.

Velasquez was not injured and no criminal charges have been filed, police said.

Some questions that aren't clear or unanswered: Was he riding with or against traffic, and was he wearing a helmet? It's a shame when this happens. It's a bigger shame when some things could be done to change the outcome. Ride with traffic, not against it.

Ywa ir ia ahame that this happen. Was he wearing a helmet, if not he can be an example to all why helmets are important. Also it is unclear if he was riding against traffic, I pass by and it looks like he was in the left turn lane wanting to cross and crossed at the wrong time. RIP
