UPDATE 10:07 p.m. - Police said the injured infant is being transferred from Bay Shore to the Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park.
A car careened off of the Long Island Expressway North Service Road Thursday night, smashing into a Brentwood 7-Eleven and injuring three people, including a pregnant woman and an infant, police said.
According to the Suffolk County Police, a car carrying a man, the pregnant woman and the infant was moving at a high speed on the North Service Road when the driver tried to turn on Wicks Road. Police said due the car's speed, the driver failed to navigate the turn and flew off the road, hitting an embankment and becoming airborne before crashing into the 7-Eleven/BP Gas Station at 260 Motor Parkway in Brentwood.
The car hit near the roof of the convenience store and flipped, landing on its own roof. Police did not say whether anyone was thrown from the car.
Police said the pregnant woman was flown to Stony Brook University Medical Center by helicopter, while the driver of the car was taken there by ambulance. The infant was sent to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore by ground.
As of 10:00 p.m., multiple police officers and squad cars, as well as the Hauppauge Fire Department's Heavy Rescue unit, were on scene, which had been taped off by police. Police also closed the North Service Road.
