Smithtown, Nesconset NYPD Cops Shot in Firefight

Two NYPD officers shot early Sunday in a firefight have been released from the hospital.

Two locally-based NYPD officers are recovering at home after being shot in a firefight early Sunday morning. 

Newsday reports NYPD Capt. Al Pizzano, 45, of Smithtown, and Officer Matthew Granahan, 35,of Nesconset, were among four NYPD cops shot during a Brooklyn firefight early Sunday morning. 

The two cops were injured when Nakwon Foxworth, 33, barricaded himself inside a Brooklyn home Saturday night. Foxworth took his pregnant girlfriend and fourth-month-old son hostage, according to Newsday.The officers entered the appartment to apprehend Foxworth after the pregnant woman managed to escape the apartment.

During the ensuing firefight, Pizzano suffered a bullet graze across his face. Granahan was shot in the lower left calf, according to Newsday. Both were treated at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn Sunday before being released. 

The two are among eight NYPD officers shot in within the past four months, Mayor Michael Bloomberg told Newsday.
