Thief Puts Man in Chokehold Over Gatorade

A man is charged with assault after allegedly attacking someone who attempted to stop the theft.

A Mastic man was arrested July 9 after he and a woman stole a case of Gatorade from 7-Eleven in Nesconset, and then put another man in a chokehold when he tried to stop them, police said.

Suffolk County police said that a 33-year-old man, entered a 7-Eleven store with a 35-year-old Islip woman, and took a case of Gatorade.

When a person inside of the store yelled at the pair to bring the case back, police said that the man wrapped his arm around the person's neck and put him in a chokehold.

The alleged thief was charged with criminal obstruction of breathing and assault in the third degree, both misdemeanors. He and the woman he was with were also charged with petty larceny, a misdemeanor, for allegedly stealing the case of Gatorade.
