Boston Flights Coming to MacArthur

Alaska-based PenAir will add flights at Ronkonkoma airport beginning in July.

Local travelers looking for flights to Boston will soon have an alternative to using the two New York City airports.

This summer, PenAir will begin offering service from Long Island MacArthur Airport to Boston. The first flight is slated to depart July 25.

On Tuesday, Islip Town Board members were scheduled to vote on an Airline Use Agreement with PenAir, an Alaska-based airline.

PenAir currently operates a limited east coast network out of Boston to Plattsburgh, New York; Presque Isle and Bar Harbor, Maine. In addition, the airline also offers a network local flights out of Anchorage, Alaska. 

The airline learned of the town's 2012 Air Service Development Incentive Program and became interested in offering service at MacArthur Airport, according to information from the town.

PenAir was founded in 1956 and has a commercial fleet of 13 Saab turbo-prop aircraft that seat between 30 and 34 passengers. According to Newsday, the airline will initially offer two daily roundtrips between Long Island and Boston's Logan International Airport. Flights to Boston will depart at 8:40 a.m. and 7:10 p.m. and flights to Long Island will depart at 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
