Census: Minority Population Grows in Hauppauge

The numbers of Hispanic, Black and Asian residents have spiked since the last Census.

Hauppauge's population is becoming more, data from the 2010 U.S. Census released last week shows.

The study showed and increase in blacks, Asians, and Hispanics in Hauppauge at a rate that outpaces those populations in Suffolk County.

Black population has increased to 457 in 2010 compared to 230 a decade ago, an increase of 98.7 percent.

At the same time, Hauppauge's Asian population jumped 71 percent to 1,236 people in 2010. This outpaces the growth of the Asian community in Suffolk County, which saw an increase of 46 percent.

Hauppauge's total population was 20,882 in 2010.

When looked at comparatively, blacks, Asians and Hispanics still make up a relatively small percentage of Hauppauge's overall population - 2.19 percent is black, 5.9 percent is Asian and 7 percent is Hispanic.
