Legislature limits sale of tattoo equipment

Suffolk County legislators unanimously approved measures to limit the sale of tattoo equipment at their March 8 Riverhead meeting.

The bill, sponsored by Legis. Thomas Barraga, R-West Islip, limits the sale of  tattoo needles, inks, guns and other equipment to licensed professionals. It aims to prevent and limit sales to amateur artists who lack professional training.

Nassau County currently permits the sale of tattoo equipment in shopping centers and retail stores, without requiring purchasers are not required a license.

The bill is now before Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy for approval.

County inspections take 13 cargo tankers off roadways for violations

Suffolk County Police inspecting fuel tankers traveling the Long Island Expressway for safety standards found numerous violations, placing 13 vehicles out of service at a fuel carrier checkpoint.

Suffolk County Police Department of Motor Carrier Safety conducted a fuel carrier checkpoint in Island 16’s parking lot, off exit 62 of the LIE, on Tuesday, 7 :30 a.m. – 2 p.m.  Of the 48 vehicles that were inspected, 51 summonses were issued and 13 taken out of service due to violations.

“Enforcement efforts such as this one enhance highway safety as well as ensure liquid calculation meter integrity to protect the residents in Suffolk County,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy in a statement. 

Fuel carriers were inspected to ensure vehicle safety regulations were being followed. They were checked to ensure proper licensing laws and that delivery meters with within the calibration limits set by Consumer Affairs.

Consumer affairs checked 57 vehicles, issuing 9 violations and placing one additional tanker out of service.

In addition, New York State Environment Conservation Police cited three fuel tankers for expired diesel emission inspections and one for an exhaust leak.

Women’s Services Hosts Teen Girls Entrepreneurship Conference

More than 150 high school students attended Suffolk County’s Teen Girls Entrepreneurship Conference at the H. Lee Dennison building on Friday.

The event brought together high school junior and seniors with 40 successful woman business owners and professional mentors and 30 educators in hopes of preparing students take the next step.

Women’s Services Office Director Deanna Marshall said the event is designed “to get teen girls thinking about what they want to do in the future, and how they need to plan to get there both educationally and financially” in a statement. 

Students participated in a full day of activities including a marketing project, goal-envisioning exercise, an introduction to personal finance and budget, and interviews with mentors to learn about their business experience.

Students from Amityville, Brentwood, Center Moriches, Central Islip, Commack, Deer Park, Patchogue-Medford, Riverhead, Westhampton Beach, William Floyd and Wyandanch high schools attended with Eastern and Western Suffolk BOCES.
