FLASH POLL: Who Won? Insiders Pick Romney

Both Democrats and Republicans thought Mitt Romney's aggressiveness had the president on his heels.

Political insiders across Downstate New York seem to agree: Mitt Romney was the victor in the first presidential debate on Wednesday night in which the former Massachusetts governor spent much of the time on the attack.

Of the 31 insiders who answered our survey, nearly two-thirds dubbed Romney winner of the debate, though most Democrats who picked Romney said he won by a slim margin. Republicans thought Romney trounced the president by a wide margin.

"Romney was on his 'A game.' Obama seemed like a deer caught in headlights ... he wasn't used to this kind of confrontation," wrote one Republican respondent.

In Patch's Red and Blue Empire Survey, sent minutes after the debate closed, 20 Democrats and 10 Republicans answered before midnight, out of more than 200 polled.

When it comes to who the news media would pick as the winner, respondents were near unanimous in thinking Romney will be crowned, though it should be noted that pundits, opinion writers and others in the media who would dub a winner make up only a fraction of the news media.

"I wonder if Obama's non-aggressive strategy is effective overall, even though he avoided looking like a bully," said one Democratic respondent, though others from the same party called out the truthfulness of Romney's answers.

"I wish Obama had simply called Romney a liar, but for some reason we can't do that."

The 90-minute debate, moderated by PBS newsman Jim Lehrer, touched on a range of economic issues, from tax code and job creation, to health care and energy investments. But at times the debate spiraled out of the moderator's control, a problem respondents felt hurt the dialogue.

While one person called out Romney's "overheated, aggressive interruptions of both Obama and Lehrer," another simply called it "the worst presidential debate I've ever watched."

For swing voters in the state, respondents thought a number of debate moments could stand out in the minds of those voters, including Romney's assertiveness – one Democrat called him "glib" – and "Obama's repeated appeals to the middle class."

Though one respondent wondered why the president didn't go after Romney for his recent scandle over remarks secretly taped at a Florida fundraiser.

"Where was the talk of the 47 percent?" one respondent wrote.

Obama and Romney still have two more debates scheduled, including one at Long Island's Hofstra University on Oct. 16 and another in Boca Raton, Fla. on Oct. 22.

The Red Empire and Blue Empire Surveys

Our surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population but rather an effort to listen to a swath of influential local Republican and Democratic activists, party leaders and elected officials in New York. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in the surveys, although not all responded to the questions.

Patch will be conducting Red Empire State and Blue Empire State surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives and liberals on the ground in New York. If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in a weekly surveys that last just a few minutes, please email Henry@patch.com.)

He is a political stooge working for a campaign - and losing. That dufus doesn't earn a nickel.

Better make your reservations on the emigration boat. You're on a cruise to nowhere.
Wayne D. October 7, 2012 at 12:18 pm
Paul, I would like to see Biden debate with Larry the cable Guy, Biden couldn't even win that one but it would be a good laugh...
Nassau Taxpayer October 7, 2012 at 12:22 pm
Similarly Ryan debating a deer in the headlights. Deer would clean up big-time.
John Gruber October 7, 2012 at 03:00 pm
that's funny because I've also seen people like Jag-Guy insult someone for providing a valid point that he didn't agree with. So I'm gonna make the generalization that all republicans insult people when they don't agree. And what do we get out of this? 2 sides that insult each other instead debating. gotta love American politics....
No one owes us anything October 7, 2012 at 03:03 pm
Oh John...such an inflated view of yourself. So typical....Rush uses that phrase everyday on his radio station. You mean to tell me that we should discount everything he has to say. I think that the millions of listeners would have to strongly disagree with you. All's far in love and war...and the fight is on to save this country.
John Gruber October 7, 2012 at 03:03 pm
9/10 of liberal's lives are in shambles? some of you never fail to amaze me with the stupidity of your comments
Jaguar-Guy October 7, 2012 at 03:04 pm
Read this and understand a bit better than you have ever previously. Romney ran circles around that knuckle-head president of ours. Without a teleprompter - feeding him canned and scripted words prepared by speech-writers, he is NOTHING. Experience ALWAYS trumps theory. All Barry has are BAD theories - and they've runing this country. He is so dumb - I mean straight STUPID - on Letterman he actually said "I don't know what the deficit is". Oh, Ok - the leader of the free world knows NOTHING of the economy he's ruined because he doesn't give a rats-ass about America. I disagree with you NT - respect your right to your opinion, but pray folks will pull the Repub. lever come Election Day. P.S. I do not get the emigration boat reference? I deleted my prior post to you, it was very insulting and I took it down. Be good.
No one owes us anything October 7, 2012 at 03:22 pm
To Jaguar-Guy..thanks for fighting the good fight. There is a lot a stake here. To bad you deleted your prior post. You are exactly right. We certainly don't need a "celebrity" or "eye candy" (as he refers to himself) running this country...we need a leader and a leader he is not. There is such an unprecedented vacuum in the Whitehouse.
Nassau Taxpayer October 7, 2012 at 03:33 pm
Huh? All you've proven is LIES, aka wannabe "facts", trump serious thought and debate. Republicans are spewing LIES UP and OUT the wazoo.
Laurajane24 October 7, 2012 at 04:39 pm
Yeah!!! Nick!!!
Laurajane24 October 7, 2012 at 04:43 pm
Go Joe!
John Gruber October 7, 2012 at 04:46 pm
hahahahahahahah "Rush uses it everyday" Thank you for proving my point. Rush also says Obama created the Batman villain "Bane" solely for this election and to present Romney a negative view, aside from the fact he was created in 1995. But keep listening to Rush
John Gruber October 7, 2012 at 04:47 pm
and all those who agree that liberalism is a mental disease are the ones with the REAL disease- ignorance
Paul Daniggelis October 7, 2012 at 05:21 pm
Romney in a walkover!
No one owes us anything October 7, 2012 at 06:29 pm
Johnnie...me thinks thou protests too much. The level of petulance that we have been able to elicit from you has been quite entertaining. Don't worry...keep plugging away and when you are as successful as Rush maybe people will listen to you too.
John Gruber October 7, 2012 at 06:47 pm
my level of petulance? please elaborate because you insult an entire group of people and claim Rush is the gospel yet I give you a perfect example of the dumb things he says then you insult me when you have no valid point to make and you call ME petulant? Thank you for proving my theory about people like you who resort to insults when they've either been proven wrong or have nothing of intelligence to say, people like you prove it EVERY TIME and I can see you're just another hypocrite
The only idiots are the people who dismiss what an entire group of people think, people like Rush, and what do you call someone who listens to an idiot? you too, are officially part of the problem
Jaguar-Guy October 8, 2012 at 12:32 am
Obama is the Scarecrow - no brains.
Jaguar-Guy October 8, 2012 at 12:47 am
All I have proven is our President has had TONS of practice leading up the debate for the leadership of the free world - The View, Letterman, Today Show - ah - who else ?? Oh yeah, then he ran into a meat-slicer named Mitt Romey who cut Barry up like swiss cheese. Obama knows absolutely jack. NT - you ridiculously write "oh that is all lies". Please tell me where I am wrong - please ? Deficit NOT cut in half, no immigration in 1st year, Gitmo still open, he's killed arabs with drones (no Due Process, and you libs were screaming for Bush's head when he held 2 terrorists heads under water - which every single Navy Seal goes through - oh the poor waterboarding, boo hoo), drilling permits on federal land had been cut in half (and tripled on private land HE can't contol), he's banned families from bringing their wounded soldiers Bibles to Walter Reed Hospital - but the Koran is still allowed, the deficit will be 24 Trillion Dollars in 2016 if this IDIOT is re-elected, horrible jobs numbers, record welfare and food stamps, he calls the Fort Hood shooting "work place violence" and the next week Janet Napolitano called a high school girl who held a sign "with God anything is possible" a Terrorist, the Whithouse Fraud and Bengazi cover-up - and so on and so on. And you simply write that those are lies ?? I was polite above, and will leave you with the southern saying folks say to people who cannot understand the most simple subjects (to simpletons like you) - "bless your heart".
Jaguar-Guy October 8, 2012 at 01:24 am
Biden - Oh, the guy who cheated in Law School and could not get on SCOTUS because he PLAGERIZED his way through school - that guy. The guy who donated $225 bucks this year - total annual donation - while Mitt Romney donated $4,000,000 Million bucks. That is just a freakin ridiculous FRAUD. Biden is a MULTIMILLIONAIRE and he gave away what NT gives away at the tables everyday. Biden is a cheap SOB and is going to get murdered by Ryan. Biden "the middle class has been CRUSHED the past 4 years" - well, thank you Captain Obvious. I think when Joe goes in the booth, he'll vote Romney too.
Nassau Taxpayer October 8, 2012 at 01:33 am

Can't wait for Biden to mow Ryan down like the deer in the headlights he is.
Beep, beep! Splat.
Jaguar-Guy October 8, 2012 at 01:42 am
Yes, your intellect matches that of our President. Thank you for showing your low IQ.
Nassau Taxpayer October 8, 2012 at 01:48 am
Thanks for confirming your level of self-delusion matches that of Mittens-the-Fraud and his deer-in-the-headlights acolyte liar. Watch the gap.
Jaguar-Guy October 8, 2012 at 01:53 am
Again, your written repartee is stunning. Thanks for revealing you have NOTHING good to write about Barry of the Pelosi Pawn - Dim Tim. Come on Tim, run ONE positive ad of your good deeds!!!

President Obama even said during the debate that the moderator was doing a "great job", if we all remember correctly! Of course after he and the whole country saw how big he lost, now the moderator was at fault,or at least partially to blame. Dont forget the altitude and the anniversary. Oh, and blame Big Bird too.
misty October 8, 2012 at 06:46 pm
I am always astonished to read that anyone would support the same Republican policies that brought us to the brink of disaster. It seems that Romney would even add a little more spice to the mixture by changing Medicare and cutting funds for education just to name a few of the issues he has in store for us. Why would anyone dream of voting for such a candidate?
Jim October 8, 2012 at 08:49 pm
I was being sarcastic with my dead people comment.
If someone is a student, unemployed, 18-29, but looking for work are they included there? It doesn't say anything about it. When I was in college, I was working at least 30 hours per week. If I was unemployed (under 2 years) and looking for work, would I have been included? Nowhere does it list the parameters. It just says 18-29, unemployed under 2 years and looking for work. That's very open to interpretation and can be looked at a variety of ways. What I'd like to know is what are the specifics of WHO they are looking at. Do they exclude anyone who is in a higher education program? Do they exclude workers that are not full time? More detail is needed; it's too open of a statistic to have any value in this discussion.
Jim October 8, 2012 at 08:50 pm
But where exactly did I write Romeny and not Romney?
