FLASH POLL: New York GOP Insiders Say Romney Can Overcome

The "47 Percent" remarks that have dogged presidential candidate Mitt Romney this week don't mean he can't win, insiders tell Patch in our Red Empire Survey.

Republicans in one of the nation's biggest Democratic strongholds have one thing to tell Mitt Romney after the rash of bad publicity he's garnered over his secretly taped "47 percent" remarks.

It ain't over yet.

The majority of Republican insiders in New York polled by Patch this week said the candidate's quagmire over his seeming dismissal of poorer or government-dependent Americans will not affect the outcome of the election, though many admit that the situation has dealt a blow to the former Massachusetts governor.

In fact, only two of the 34 influentials who answered our survey thought the remarks spell the end of Romney's bid for the Oval Office.

Romney has faced immense scrutiny this week following the release of video secretly shot at a Florida closed-door fundraiser in which the candidate appears to disparage who he calls President Barack Obama's loyal base of voters.

"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what," Romney said in the video released by Mother Jones.

Romney so far has stood by his remarks, but conceded that they were not "elegantly stated."

It's a similar strategy suggested by many of Patch's respondents, a group of political insiders who include campaign organizers, community board members, activists, town supervisors and congressional candidates who all gave their remarks on the condition of anonymity.

"It true and they should confront it head on. Explain why jobs are better then dependency," said one respondent.

"Do not apologize," said another. "Continue the message that America is about private sector opportunity and entrepreneurs and not the government running and coddling our lives."

In fact, most of the advice our insiders said they'd give to Romney and his campaign managers revolved around keeping their message on point with the country's economic recovery.

"They should immediately refocus on the fact that there are so many in need of govt subsidies because of Obamas failed economic policies," said one respondent, while another said, "don't be so stupid. Stick to the pressing issues and the failures of the Obama administraion."

Our insiders, however, did criticize the candidate for not being a smarter campaigner, especially when it comes to speaking more carefully in public.

"Be positive, be forthright and think before you speak (even in private)," one respondent said.

The Red Empire Survey

Our surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population but rather an effort to listen to a swath of influential local Republican activists, party leaders and elected officials in New York. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in the surveys, although not all responded to this week's questions. Surveys were conducted between July 23 and July 31.

Patch will be conducting Red Empire State and Blue Empire State surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives and liberals on the ground in New York. If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in a weekly surveys that lasts just a few minutes, please email Henry@patch.com.)

hat - correct again. Republicans are a cult. Thank you for writing with such eloquence that I now understand that you are right and have always been right. Repub party is a CULT.

Highasshat that study was so completely debunked as pure conjuncture and opinion that for you to refer to it points out that you are a just a flamer.
John Gruber September 27, 2012 at 04:12 pm
when you generalize the beliefs of many as a cult, you lose a lot of credibility. there are wackjobs from both sides of the fence, as this thread clearly shows. Even though some Republicans probably view Democrats as a cult as well....
John Gruber September 27, 2012 at 04:17 pm
that 25 plus the 17 was only for 3 COMPANIES. If you supported Bush's bailouts which I personally believe most were necessary, yes it is somewhat hypocritical but my point is Obama isn't the only reason companies owe us money. Just ask Citi Bank, who I again state, uses TAXPAYER money, given by Bush, for naming rights to Citi Field, not even to mention Frddie/Fernnie.
John Gruber September 27, 2012 at 04:18 pm
Romney is also a proven liar, I don't understand why you constantly rail on Obama for "lying" when the guy you support is doing EXACTLY the same thing...

where was your link?
John Gruber September 27, 2012 at 04:20 pm
FYI I really don't care what a bunch of polls say. I wait for the election. Also, Gary Johnson isn't going to win, so I could really care less who wins, we're just going to be getting a different version than the last guy we had.
Hint: Unless something is done about these parties, every candidate from now on will be mediocre, much similar to Obama and Bush

Speaking of cults has anyone looked into the history of the Morman church. It's quite bizarre.Finding golden tablets in Palmyra,NY. Reading those tablets with giant glasses. It's only been about 32 years that they have seen black people as equal members in the Church. They say Church I say cult.

to John Gruber:
The principle characteristic of cults is the dismissal of objective reality in favor of the perceptions mandated by their particular dogma. By that standard, the opinions of many of this thread (for instance, the assertion that ALL polls are liberal plots to discredit Romney's true standing) are cult statements.

Romney was NEVER a job creator. His job was to create wealth for himself and his investors AT ANY COST. Think I am full of it? Typical liberal bs? Mr. Romney himself can be seen here touting Bain As A Way To 'Harvest' Companies At A 'Significant Profit.' Another damning statement straight from the horses mouth

Food for thought.
Hat tip Arthur Herman of AIE (see link below) "The real test of any economic theory is, does it work? President Obama and his advisers tried the Keynesian “stimulus” formula to get the country back on track after the 2007-8 recession. The result has been the slowest economic recovery in modern history. In 1980, by contrast, President Ronald Reagan self-consciously tried the supply-side formula for the first time by rolling back regulations; imposing capital gains and personal income tax cuts; and making it clear America was back in business again. The result was 12 years of sustained economic growth in a row—the longest unbroken expansion in American history—with an average GNP growth rate of 3.2 percent. Twenty-one million jobs were created; even government revenues rose—a paradox created by the fact that the increased economic activity generated more taxable income. Will a new round of tax-cuts revive this economy? The evidence seems clear, but the Keynesians will still be unhappy. They admit economic growth happened in the Reagan years, but insist it was the “wrong” kind of growth because it was aimed at satisfying fleeting consumer tastes, instead of creating new infrastructure or green jobs or something." http://www.aei.org/article/economics/fiscal-policy/pro-supply-side-economics-worked-wonders-for-reagan-obama-should-give-it-a-shot/

Kudos to you ARice! It certainly is daunting to deal with these airheads, but I am trying not to diminish anyone's opinion. Your comments are intelligent, cogent, well-thought out, substantiated and factual. My hat is off to you. I enjoy reading your thoughts. Keep up the good work. We have an exhausting job ahead of us and it isn't going to be easy to try and change minds. But I don't want to use the term change minds, I would prefer to say "enlightening" people and letting their own innter intelligence shine through.

The problem with Obama-ites is that there is really nothing you have to impune Romney or Ryan. There is nothing of substance and anything you have is truly irrelevant because he was not in a public position when he did anything. He was in the private sector, so let's stop the weak, pointless, baseless attacks on the two of them, when in reality these attacks should be aimed at Obama, who has a record as long as the Gotti family. If you want to attack actions, attack your own candidate who, while in a public office, has descimated our country. Romeny and Ryan's actions are of no consequence
John K Massaro September 27, 2012 at 04:43 pm
That I'll agree with, Bob.
Furthermore, the similarities between Mormans & Muslims are hard to ignore... - A founding prophet who received visits from an angel, leading to revelation of a book of scripture. - Insistence that their religion is a complete way of life, meant to directly influence every facet of existence. - A belief that theirs constitutes the one and only completely true religion on the earth today. - Assertions that modern Christianity does not conform to the original religion taught by Jesus Christ. - Rejection of the Christian doctrines of Original Sin and the Trinity. - Special reverence for, though not worship of, their founding prophet. - An active interest in proselytizing nonbelievers. - Strong emphasis upon chastity, including modesty in dress. - A clergy drawn from the laity, without necessarily requiring collegiate or seminary training. - A division of the religion into a minimum of two parties after the death of the founding prophet, with one party claiming that leadership should continue through the prophet's descendents, and the other party rejecting this idea. - Belief that the text of the Bible, as presently constituted, has been adulterated from its original form. - Belief that one's marriage can potentially continue into the next life, if one is faithful to the religion.

A final thought.... Just for the conservatives let the liberals on this thread wallow in their ignorance....

John Gruber September 27, 2012 at 04:52 pm
I prefer to view them as ignorant, rather than belonging to a cult because lets face it, there are people on both sides whose minds are so warped that they truly believe that anyone who thinks or says differently is wrong, it's not just limited to a single side. It looks like 90% of the country belongs to either cult

to ARice:
The appropriate comparison of economic recoveries is not Reagan-Obama but Hoover-Obama. The cataclysm facing President Obama when he assumed office could have created a new Great Depression, and WOULD have, had the Democrats not taken decisive action. The result of Democratic intervention is that we are OUT of recession and into recovery when, otherwise, we would all be on bread lines. The slowness of the recovery is entirely the fault of Republican legislators who have failed to lean the lesson of the Great Depression (i.e. that constriction of credit to balance the budget exacerbates economic depression) and yearn for a return to simpler (and more simple-minded) times. If Republicans had approved the full Stimulus measures that the Democrats proposed, a truly robust recovery would be ongoing. On the other hand, had Obama reacted to the Bush catastrophe in the same way that Reagan reacted to the Carter "malaise", we would be heading downward into the fifth year of an epochal depression.

I agree JG....HHS, no need to vote...you won!!! Congratulations..oops then again, the EXIT POLLS, those taken right after people voted in Wisconson, had Walker losing, yet 49 minutes after the polls closed, Walker was announced the winner!! THIS IS WHY I IGNORE POLLSTERS!

Good, right. Romney is a Mormon and Obama is a Muslim. Let's move on already.
Obama is winning and the race is over - the polls are 100% correct and Romney is 10 points behind in ALL polls. The Dems have everything locked-up tight. Congratulations again on the wins.
Jaguar-Guy September 27, 2012 at 05:16 pm
That is right MB. Romney never created anything and cheated to pile his "ill-gotten gain".
Jaguar-Guy September 27, 2012 at 05:19 pm
That's right - it was Bush's catastrophe. Obama has done a great job these past 4 years.
