Hauppauge Reacts To Election Outcomes

Concerned Citizens group, trade unions comment on Election Day results.

Hauppauge residents and workers turned up on the polls on Election Day.  Each motivated by their own issues, shared their reactions to Tuesday's outcomes.

New York State Senate, Second District

Incumbent John Flanagan, R-East Northport, beat his democratic challenger by a greater than 2-to-1 ratio. Suffolk County Republican Committee Chairman John Jay LaValle said voter support demonstrates Flanagan has done a tremendous job to represent the local community.

New York State Senate, Third District

The Concerned Citizens of Hauppauge struck a cord with voters by asking them not to re-elect State Rep. Brian Foley. Foley, D-Blue Point, will be succeeded by Republican Lee Zeldin. 

" We feel that Foley didn't respond to our needs," said Stefan Krompier, Northfield Woods Civic Association president and member of Concerned Citizens For Hauppauge.

The homeowners worked together to ask people not to re-elect Foley for his inaction against Suffolk Asphalt Supply on Rabro Drive throughout Election Day.

Krompier said he feels the fliers he helped distribute in Bohemia, Ronkonkoma, Oakdale, and surroundings towns made a difference in the election; even though he felt Foley had other issues that prevented him from begin re-elected.

"The message we hope we send to local elected officials is your first priority has to be the health and welfare fo your constitutents or someone else is going to take your place," Krompier said. 

 

New York State Assembly, Sixth District:

Phil Ramos, D-Brentwood, received nearly 75 percent of the vote, barreling past his challenger Republican Mo Elsayed.

Incumbent Michael Fitzpatrick, R-Smithtown, was re-elected to his fifth term by receiving more than 15,000 votes over his Democratic challenger Richard Macellero.

At The State Level,

Hauppauge-based Long Island Federation of Labor President John Durso said he was pleased U.S. Rep. Tim Bishop beat out Republican Randy Altschuler to represent New York's first congressional district.

"Congressman Bishop understands the hardships our members and their families are facing every day, and he is a leader in the fight to create jobs and reenergize our regional economy. He has worked hard to protect our retirement security; and he has proposed legislation to curb outsourcing and fight corporate tax evasion," Durso said.

Long Island Contractors Association was pleased with the overall outcome of Tuesday's races.

 "These election night results begin to confront those who would disregard the future of our region's core skeleton, our public infrastructure... ," said Long Island Contractors Association Executive Director Marc Herbst, whose offices are in Hauppauge, in a press statement. "In New York State, those leaders who rallied to protect our infrastructure were supported by an industry that represents the heart and soul of the working middle class."
