Islip Grants Limited Access To Fire Island

Residents and property owners may return to barrier island during specific times Wednesday through Saturday.

Year-round residents and property owners of Fire Island are being granted temporary access this week by Islip Town officials.

Islip Supervisor Tom Croci signed an executive order that grants wider civilian access to the barrier island that sustained substantial damage from Hurricane Sandy. Since the storm hit two weeks ago, Fire Island has been off limits to the public.

“The safety of our residents remains our primary concern, given the catastrophic damage on Fire Island,” Croci said. “Fire and emergency service teams along with contractors, plumbers, electricians and inspectors have improved conditions to the point where limited and temporary access is appropriate for homeowners and year round residents."

Temporary access will be permitted for those whose homes lie within Islip’s borders Wednesday through Saturday from 10:10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.

Those going to Fire Island during these allotted times are required to use ferry service. Travel by private boat or by road is not permitted. Visitors will be required to supply personal identification and proof of property ownership for law enforcement personnel.

Town facilities at Atlantique Beach and Marina remain off limits to the public.

As residents and supporters of Fire Island, we are asking for your immediate support in rebuilding our dunes that were decimated by Hurricane Sandy. The dune line protects both communities on the barrier island as well as life and property on Long Island's South Shore.
