Lumber Yard Condemned by Smithtown's Building Department

A sign now adorns the door of the vacant building, but plans to work on the building by the developer could soon be viewed by the town board.

The former home to Nassau Suffolk Lumber and Supply Corp., the abandoned lumber yard at 102 West Main Street in Smithtown, has been condemned by the town.

Signs have been placed on the door by the town's building department, stating the building is "unsafe and its use or occupancy has been prohibited."

While the building is currently condemned, Town Council member Edward Wehrheim said there has been chatter about plans by the developer to move forward with building at the location.

"We're being told through the rumor mill that the developer is in the process of getting ready to submit a new site plan to the planning department," he said. "It's very similar to the old one, some changes – I don't have any idea of what they are. We would wait until it's turned in to our planning department and then as a board take a look at it."

Can someone clarify what it means when the Town condemns a building. Does that mean the owner has to tear it down, or just secure it?

What I can't stand is the trashy buy gold stores. Surely there is something that can be done about all those signs, they are offensive. Why can't this town look like Northport or Huntington?
