Photo of the Day: Construction Slows Route 111

Construction workers caught between lanes of traffic as they work on traffic signals and utility wires.

Traffic on Hauppauge's Route 111 is slow and hindered by efforts underway to reconstruct the Route 347/111 intersection as part Route 347 expansion project.

New York State Department of Transportation contractors and utility crews have been frequently spotted working on in the median of Route 111/Wheeler Road in recent days, as crews prepare to expand the roadway. This has led to slowing of traffic as workers park trucks and block off media areas in the center of the roadway.

The ongoing construction is  to transform 15 miles of Route 347 into an environmentally conscious, motor and pedestrian-friendly highway stretching from Hauppauge to Port Jefferson. The one-mile stretch in Hauppauge from the Route 347/454 split to the Route 111 intersection is scheduled to be completed by late summer 2012.
