Smithtown Tests Green Motor Oil in Town Vehicles

Times of Smithtown reports Smithtown Highway Department using biodegradable motor oil in two vehicles since June 2011.

The Smithtown Highway Department is testing out a new way of going green with its town vehicles.

Times of Smithtown reports the Town of Smithtown Highway Department has tested out a green motor oil in half a dozen of its vehicle since June 2011.

The town has tested a biodegradable, fully synthetic 5W-30 motor oil, called G-oil from Northport-based Green Earth Technologies, made from plant oils, vegetable oils and animal fats. The motor oil is designed to allow vehicles to go 10,000 miles without an oil change, versus the standard 3,000 miles, but is more costly.
