The Town of Smithtown on Tuesday voted unanimously to make it illegal to smoke at town beaches and parks, becoming one of a handful of municipalities in the state to enact such a ban.
The move also makes it illegal to smoke within 50 feet of town buildings.
A similar ban in New York state was actually lifted in May following pressure from a New York City-based smokers advocacy group. The state is hoping to reinstate the ban.
