This Day in History: Town Board Votes to Tear Armory Down

The Town of Smithtown board voted to solicit bids to tear the Nesconset Armory down in 2004.

On this day in 2004, the Town of Smithtown board voted to solicit bids to tear the Nesconset armory down, receiving three votes to two, according to an archived New York Times report.

According to the report, the town board wanted to give the armory to the Smithtown Special Library District, which would tear the building down and construct a new library. Assemblyman Michael Fitzpatrick stated he wanted the building to be used as a recreation center, and would support library use of part of the building.

Town board members Jane Conway and Joanne Gray casted the two votes in opposition of tearing the armory down.
