QUICK STATS: Rental Market A Small One in Hauppauge

Owner-occupied homes by far the norm in town, Census data show.

Despite proximity to a vast industrial park, major roadways, an airport and commercial centers, the rental market in Hauppauge makes up a very small slice of the local real estate, Census data show.

According to the U.S. Census Department American Community Survey Estimates, out of Hauppauge's 7,617 housing units, only 1,109 are rentals, representing about 15 percent of the housing market. The latest ACS estimates are based on data from 2007-2011.

Nationally, rentals make up about 45 percent of the housing stock, according to the Census.

According to the ACS, the majority of the rentals in Hauppauge are occupied by locals identifying themselves as white, renting 761 units. Asian members in the community make up the second largest rental demographic, renting 161 units in town.
