3 Hauppauge Students Earn National Merit Semifinalist Status

Seniors achieved standout scores on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Hauppauge seniors Brian Eng, Sarah Mackin and Varun Mehta have achieved something special: they have been named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition program.

“The entire Hauppauge School District community is honored to congratulate Brian Eng, Sarah Mackin and Varun Mehta on being named National Merit Semifinalists,” superintendent Patricia Sullivan-Kriss said.

The students achieved impressive scores on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which is given to approximately 1.5 million people. They will compete for 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $35 million, and the finalists will be announced in February. The process also entailed getting letters of recommendation, writing an essay and performing well on the SAT as a follow-up to the PSAT.
