Bretton Woods Principal Resigns After First Year

Jane Ruthkowski has submitted her resignation letter and will leave Hauppauge on Aug. 15.

One of Hauppauge Public School's elementary school principals has handed in her resignation after only one year. 

Jane Ruthkowski, principal of , will be leaving Hauppauge Public schools after the end of the 2012-13 school year. Hauppauge Board of Education accepted her resignation at their May 22 meeting, marking Ruthkowski's last day as August 15. 

Hauppauge school officials did not give any reason or explanation for Ruthkowski's resignation.

Ruthkowski was one of district's , alongside Claudine DiMuzio and Kristen Reingold. She took over for Matt Giordano, the former principal of Bretton Woods of 15 years, who retired at the end of the 2010-2011 school year. Ruthkowski was one of two individuals hired by Hauppauge administrators from more than 175 applications received, offered a yearly salary of $140,485.

Ruthkowski has worked for more than 15 years in elementary education. She started out as a second-grade teacher in the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District before stepping up as an assistant principal in Plainview-Old Bethpage. She most recently served as principal at the Briarcliff Elementary School in the Shoreham-Wading River School District.

Trish Auerbach, a spokewoman for Hauppauge Public Schools, said a replacement has not yet been named for Ruthkowski.
