Former School Board Prez Fills Empty BOE Seat

The Hauppauge Board of Education voted Thursday to appoint Geri Richter to the trustee position.

A familiar face is back on the Hauppauge Board of Education.

After accepting resumes from six candidates, the board appointed former school board president, Geri Richter, to the seat left open by Patricia Lesser, who resigned in June.

Richter, who ran for re-election in May, but lost by 143 votes, has served on the board for nine years.

“The BOE took this job very seriously and had a very lengthy discussion in executive session. We considered every letter of interest and resume,” BOE President Eileen Mass, said.

The vote passed 4-1. Robert Scarito was the one opposition and Ann Macaluso abstained.

“I’m very happy to be back finishing the jobs we already started,” Richter said.

One of those tasks is creating web-based Board of Education packets and implementing online voting for board meetings. Richter said that the move would make school district information more accessible to the public.

Richter will serve on the board until the next budget and trustee vote, which will take place in May 2014.
