"This is the first time Hauppauge students have placed second and have qualified for the national competition," said Doreen Gordon, the director of social studies and business. "The middle and high school social studies teachers have worked closely with the students to make the projects both meaningful and successful."

Based on their placements, these four students will travel to the University of Maryland to compete in the national competition from June 13 to 16.

More than 7,200 New York students from 148 schools competed in the National History Day competition that involved more than 700,000 students across the United States.

The National History Day Competition offers students in grades 6 to 12 to explore local, state, national and world history. Students chose topics based on the 2011 theme, "Debate and Diplomacy" which they researched using libraries, archives, museums and oral history interviews to create final projects ranging from research papers to documentary films and websites.
