Hauppauge High School Senior Named Intel Semifinalist

A total of 50 Long Island seniors were named as semifinalists in the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search.

A Hauppauge high school senior is among 50 across Long Island and 300 nationwide to be chosen as semifinalists in the 2014 Intel Talent Science Search.

Nicholas Karavolias, 17, was chosen for his project “A Comparison of Powdery Mildew Susceptible Foliage Sourced from Residential and Commercial Landscapes for the Presence of Orthotydeus lambi.”

Students receive $1,000 for becoming semifinalists. Each school wins $1,000 for every semifinalist named.

Karavolias was awarded an all-expense-paid summer study trip to Germany in 2012 after taking the Level 3 National German Exam for High School students, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German. He was one of 11 top Hauppauge High School students named by the school in 2014.

Out of this group of 300, 40 finalists will be chosen to attend the Intel Science Talent Institute in Washington, DC in March where they will undergo further judging and share $630,000 in awards.
