Hauppauge Robotics Team Leads in National Competition

The team won the highest award given at the robotics championship in St. Louis.

The Hauppauge robotics team recently took top honors at the Small Business Partnership of Long Island’s (SBPLI) FIRST Robotics Regional Competition.

The competition requires students to build robots from scratch starting with a tool kit of random materials sent by the competition. The robots must be able to complete certain tasks, such as throwing disks or climbing ladders. The teams have just six weeks to complete their robots. The students work on building their team's robot six days a week, day and night, until the competition.

Hauppauge won the SBPLI championship at Hofstra University last month, in an alliance with Westhampton Beach High School, Queens Vocational and Technical High School and Long Island City High School.

Also at the Long Island competition, Hauppauge was granted the "Chairman's Award," the most prestigious honor awarded. The award honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate, according to the competition's website.

The win qualified the team to move on to national round in St. Louis.
