Hauppauge Schools, Library Announce American Hero Writing Contest

Students asked to write about one American who has done an act that makes them worthy of being an American Hero for prizes.

Hauppauge students are being asked to share who they consider an American Hero and why in a writing contest.

Hauppauge Public Schools and The Friends of the Arts of and  have joined together for the first time to host the "American Heroes: Past and Present" writing contest. Students in second to 12th grade are asked to write a story, essay or poem that highlights the achievements of one American who they feel has done something to make that person an American Hero.

The contest rules defines a modern hero as, "a person who is known for his or her achievements or noble acts," as posted on the district's website.

All entries must be typed, doubled spaced and contain a title. Submissions should include a student's name, address, grade, teacher's name, school name and school's address.

The deadline to submit an entry is March 2. All entries should be mailed or delivered in person to: Susan Sparago at the Hauppauge Public Library or Dr. Christopher Michael at .

Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place winners in four-grade categories: second and third grade, fourth and fifth grade, sixth to eighth grade and high school winners. First-place winners will receive a $25 gift card, while second-place winners will receive a $15 gift card.
