Hauppauge Senior Wins Historic Essay Contest

Chris Whitehorn wins the grand prize in Smithtown Historical Society's essay contest.

A Hauppauge High School senior is the winner of the Smithtown Historical Society's annual essay contest.

Chris Whitehorn was selected of the grand prize winner of the Mildred E . Smith's annual essay contest. When asked to answer the question "If you could erect a statue of a famous Smithtown historical figure, who would it be," Whitehorn chose St. James resident and architect Lawrence Smith Butler.

"I chose Mr. Butler because he was instrumental in designing and building many of the historic sites in Smithtown," he said. "He built churches, Smithtown Town Hall, the fire station and designed the Smithtown Library. When I drive around Smithtown, I'm truly impressed by the influence Mr. Butler had on our community and our town."
