Hauppauge To Compete On "The Challenge"

High school students take on West Islip in the first round of MSG Varsity's "The Challenge" on Dec. 27.

Hauppauge High School will be competing against West Islip in the first round  MSG Varsity's trivia show "The Challenge," to be aired on Dec. 27 at 5:30 p.m on Cablevision's channel 14.

On "The Challenge," high school teams will be asked to answer questions based on their knowledge of history, arts and literature, current events, match and science. The pressure is on as students will be taped before a live studio audience. 

Representing Hauppauge High School are team captain senior Nolan Conway, Leroy Farrell, Humayra Kabir, Michael Karavolias and Delia Zhao. Their academic advisors are second language teachers Scott Kraft and Frank Schnur.

"We're thrilled to provide these students from Hauppauge High School and West Islip High School the opportunity to showcase their talent with their community," said Theresa Chillianis, general manager of MSG Varsity in a press statement. "The Challenge features some of the brightest students from across the tri-state area and we hope everyone will tune-in to see them compete for the Tri-State Championship."

Jared Cotter, former FUSE TV host and a popular semi-finalist from American Idol, will be returning to "The Challenge" for his second season as a host. Cotter also serves as a moderator, reading the questions aloud to the competing teams.

If Hauppauge High School can beat West Islip, they will advance into the second round of regional competition. Over a period of months, teams across Suffolk county will play each other for the title of regional champion and receive $2,500 for their school.

The winning teams of each region go on to "The Challenge Championship"  in a tri-state showdown. The winner of the Tri-State area will receive $10,000 in prize money, with $500 for each student participating in the final Challenge championship game. 

This is the 14th season of "The Challenge," which initially started on Long Island and has expanded to include 184 high schools from the tri-state region. Areas represented include Suffolk and Nassau counties, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Westchester/Lower Hudson Valley, New Jersey and Connecticut.
