New Middle School Track Approved

Hauppauge school board votes 7-0 to use legislative grant for athletic improvements.

Hauppauge school officials unanimously voted to use an $85,000 legislative grant to build a new Middle School track.

The grant was gifted to the school district by Sen. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) and Sen. John Flanagan (R- East Northport) with the condition that it had to be used during the current school year.

The track will be made out of asphalt, which is more durable than a cedar alternative.

Superintendent Patricia Sullivan-Kriss said that the track at the Middle School, which is virtually unusable due to its poor condition, had been a sore spot for the district for several years.

While the track will not be elaborate as the high school's, students will be able to use it during gym class. It will also be open to members of the community after school hours, she said.
