Pines Student Wins Brookhaven National Lab's Science Fair

Second-grader Hannah Fioramonti earns first place for "Dirty Hands, Dirty Money."

A Pines Elementary School student won first place in 27th annual Brookhaven National Lab's Science Fair.

Hannah Fioramonti, a second-grade student, took home first place for her project "Dirty Hands, Dirty Money," that researched the cleanliness of paper money. The projects are judged by grade level.

More than 550 students from 118 Suffolk County school districts competed in the 2011 Brookhaven National Science Fair on May 7. The fair was started in 1985 in hopes of generate an interest in science among Suffolk County students, according to Brookhaven Lab spokeswoman Diane Greenberg.
