School Officials to Discuss Tax Cap, Youth Development Survey

Hauppauge school officials hope to address residents on two important topics Tuesday night, taxes and drugs in Schools. 

The Hauppauge Board of Education will hold its first board meeting of March at 8 p.m. Tuesday night in the James Baxter board room of the . 

The evening will be lead by a presentation by Kyrie Segal, assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction and technology, on what students are really saying about drug and alcohol use in Hauppauge. The New York State Youth Development survey was given to all seventh- to 12th-grade students during the 2010-11 school year to assess substance abuse and other behavior among local teens. Segal will present the findings of this study as relates to Hauppauge along with input from the Hauppauge Community and Youth Alliance.

Hauppauge school officials will address how incoming revenue, taxes and the newly implemented New York State tax cap will impact the district's 2012-13 budget. Superintendent Patricia Sullivan-Kriss presented that includes hiring five new special education teachers, the reduction of 15 teaching assistant positions and purchasing of new buses.
