SCOPE Pre-K Coming to Hauppauge Schools

An information session will be held June 10.

Hauppauge School District will start preschool education classes for children ages three and four for the 2013-14 school year through the SCOPE program at the Whiporwil School.

The SCOPE pre-school program offers an imaginative and developmental curriculum that encourages creativity and social skills, as well as, expands on readiness skills that will be transitional into the Hauppauge kindergarten program.

Superintendent Patricia Sullivan-Kriss said that she began to look into the program after receiving a phone call from a parent asking why the district did not offer a pre-school program, citing expensive tuition rates for private pre-schools in the area.

After researching the program and finding four classrooms that could be used at the administration building, the board of education decided to move ahead with SCOPE.

“I’m very excited about it and I thank the board’s interest in it because I think it’s just another service we can provide to our parents at a time when some of our parents are struggling to make ends meet in the area of preschool,” the superintendent said at this month’s Board of Education meeting.

The district did hold the Pre-K Scope program in years past at the High School, but it was dropped when the space was needed for the school’s students.   SCOPE is a self-sustaining program, the superintendent said, explaining that the district will receive a small amount of rental income for housing it.

Those interested can attend an informational session June 10 at 7 p.m. in the James Baxter Board Room, Whiporwil School, 495 Hoffman Lane, Hauppauge, NY 11788.
