Pines Elementary's fourth-grade students explore math through hands-on competition.

Pines Elementary School students are learning math through an innovative, hands-on competition.

The Pines Elementary School started the Mini-Metric Olympics for its fourth-grade students. The Mini-Metrics Olympics allows students to explore mathematical concepts through hands-on activities.

Students held an opening ceremony complete with a paper torch and class parade to mark the opening of the Mini-Metric Olympics. They will be using  their estimation  skills in activities such as the paper plate discus, plastic straw javelin, left-handed sponge squeeze and more to measure length, area, capacity and mass using the metric system.
