Students Rock Out To Aid Japan's Tsunami Victims

Hauppauge High School's Japan Relief Concert brought the community together to raise money for the American Red Cross and 1,500 pairs of socks.

Nearly 300 Hauppauge residents rocked out at the Japan Relief Concert on Thursday night. Six musical performances ranging from acoustic blends of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to pop-rock alternative band Almost A Memory created a diverse set that kept the audience on the edge of their seats.

"I think this is great. Tonight is a definite success," said John Carbone, event organizer and a Hauppauge High School student.

More than 1,500 pairs of socks were donated to the "Socks For Japan" campaign in addition to ticket sales and raffles raising money for the American Red Cross's Japan Tsunami Relief Fund. The total raised was not available by Friday morning.

"We are now looking for a way to ship the socks. If people or busineses are shipping to Japan, maybe they can ship it for us," said assistant principle Joy Ferrara.
