Baseball Team To Host Turn 2 For A Cure

Hauppauge's varsity baseball and softball team work together to raise funds for four local charities.

The Hauppauge varsity baseball and softball teams will hold the second annual Turn 2 For A Cure to raise funds for local charities in honor of one of their felllow students on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Hauppauge High School.

Kevin Giachetti, head coach of Eagles varsity baseball team, said the event started last year when his assistant coach Mark Giardino was closely working with Hauppauge student Nick Sicoli, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Giardino created Turn 2 For A Cure to honor of Sicoli's support of the baseball team, as the avid sports fan attends many of the Eagles' home games.

"I was worried it would take away from our senior day at first, but it has added to it as there were so many people here," Giachetti said.

The event took on a second meaning when one of the Hauppauge baseball player's asked to honor his former girlfriend, Hauppauge student, who died of brain cancer in 2008.

Turn 2 For A Cure honors both Sicoli and Tomkin by raising donations for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the Making Headway Foundation, the Hauppauge Booster Club and the school district's Care and Share program.

The event will kick off at 4 p.m. when the Eagles baseball team hosts their senior ceremony before their match against Kings Park. The Lady Eagles have joined the cause this year, as they will play against Kings Park simultaneously at 4 p.m.

In addition to the games, Hauppauge Little League will be hosting a pitching and hitting contest for all ages, sponsored by Aquafina. There will be rides for children, games and raffles tickets for sale.

"It will be a fun day out for the family, helping out the local community. One of the thing we realized is we want to give the money back directly to kids in Hauppauge," Giachetti said.

This year, the Hauppauge baseball team's booster club will receive some of the monies raised to create a scholarship fund for a student who is involved in local charity work.

If rain prevents the varsity sports games, Turn 2 For a Cure will be rescheduled for Thursday.
