Eagles Baseball Falls To North Babylon, 3-0

The No. 4 Hauppauge baseball team suffers tough upset loss to No. 11 North Babylon in the first round of the Suffolk County playoffs.

The Hauppauge Eagles baseball team was upset by No. 11 North Babylon, losing 3-0, in the first round of the Suffolk County Class AA Championship on Tuesday evening. Hauppauge’s batting lineup struggled to hit North Babylon’s pitching, only making two hits all evening.

The loss pushes the Eagles down to the loser’s bracket, where the team must beat No. 13 Bellport at 4 p.m. this afternoon or be eliminated from the playoffs.

Heroes: Center fielder John Colby was one of the few bright spots in the Eagles batting lineup. Colby had a leadoff walk in the first inning, hit leadoff triple in the third and hit a deep drive to left field that was caught by North Babylon outfielder Nate Trashmansky only feet before the fence. The Eagles other hit on Tuesday was made by Robbie Scheim.

Hauppauge pitcher C.J. Schildt only allowed five hits, four walks and three earned running in five plus innings.

Turning Point: North Babylon hitter John DiFazio hit a one-out sacrifice fly in the fourth to bring in the first run of the game and put North Babylon on the board in the top of the fourth inning.

North Babylon pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the sixth inning to make it 3-0 as Nick Domnisch hit an RBI double and shortstop Mike Lyon added an RBI single.

Quotes: “I told the kids that I was proud of some of their at-bats and we have to rally off that,” said Eagles head coach Kevin Giachetti. “The only thing I was disappointed in was that after North Babylon made it 3-0, we didn’t have the fight that we normally have. I don’t know if it was because it was hot, but that wasn’t the team that we’ve seen all year-long.”

Giachetti said the Eagles baseball team also lost the first round of playoffs in 2010, before battling their way back to the Suffolk County Class AA finals.

"This is a long haul, and last year we lost the first game, battled and made it to the county final and there’s no reason we can’t do it again this year, but we won’t do it if we don’t have fight and we don’t show heart," he said.

Bottom Line: It’s do or die for Hauppauge, who cannot suffer another loss or their season is over. The Eagles must bring their A game if they hope to make it through the loser’s bracket and make another Suffolk County championship game appearance.
