Heroes: Hauppauge took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. C.J. Schildt and Tyler Scanlon were both major contributors to the Eagles offense as each starter had three hits in Thursday’s win.

“We won 15-1 [at Islip] the day before [on Wednesday] and I was very concerned because sweeping a team is never easy,” said Eagles head coach Kevin Giachetti. “But I was excited to see us put up a couple of quick runs in the first inning.”

Starting pitcher Joe Policastro gave a solid performance, throwing six innings allowing three runs with five strikeouts.

Turning Point: Hauppauge took control of the game in the second inning, shutting down Islip’s batters while extending their lead.

Centerfielder John Colby made a running catch in the top of the second inning, preventing on a ball which would have gone for extra bases.

Then Policastro fought past a two-strike count and with two outs, ripped a two-run single down the right field line to give the team a 4-0 lead.

Quotes: “I like how John Colby played in centerfield for us today,” Giachetti said. “He got the game started for us with a big hit and he made some great plays out there. Our pitchers have known all season that if they throw strikes, our guys are going to make the plays behind them.”

Key Stat: When Schildt and Scanlon can deliver six hits at the top of the batting lineup, Hauppauge is going to end up on the winning side more often than not.

“Tyler always gives us good at-bats and he always finds a way to put the ball in play,” Giachetti said.

Bottom Line: The win was a significant one for the Eagles, keeping the team one game ahead of second place Eastport-South Manor in the League V standings.  Whether Hauppauge brings home the league title will depend on its final three-game series against Kings Park, who are  7-7 in league play.

Next: The Eagles will travel to take on Kings Park on May 16 at 4 p.m.
